"To upgrade or not to upgrade?" That is the question! With so much 'fact and fiction' being broadcast about the new TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, TBS Consulting would like to take this opportunity to answer some frequently asked questions.

Are trainers and assessors required to hold the new TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment?

The simple answer is; "No'. The National Quality Council (NQC) has advised that there is no immediate requirement for trainers and assessors to upgrade to the new qualification. It is important to note however, that Appendix 2 on page 84 of the Users' Guide to the Essential Conditions and Standards for Continuing Registration will require trainers and assessors to hold the 401104 TAE Certificate IV in Training & Assessment by June 2012. Until that time Appendix 3 on page 86 applies.

Will attaining the new qualification satisfy trainers and assessors' professional development requirements?

No, not as the only professional development activity for the year. Attaining the new qualification will certainly contribute to an overall professional development strategy but should not be considered as the definitive professional development activity.

Is the BSZ98 Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training qualification still 'good enough'?

In principle yes, but...

In order to be considered compliant according to AQTF Standard 1.4d a trainer and assessor must demonstrate ongoing professional development in the area of vocational education and training. The gap between the competencies demonstrated to attain the BSZ98 Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training qualification and current industry best practice (based on the competencies within the TAE 401104 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment) is enormous. Undertaking professional development activities that will sufficiently bridge this gap (to demonstrate compliance) is now extremely difficult.

A simple strategy to overcome this situation is to attain the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. As mentioned above, this should be part of an overall professional development strategy but holding this qualification will make the ultimate goal of compliance much easier to achieve.
